Marks Identifying the Church of Jesus Christ

I. INTRODUCTION: LET THE BIBLE SPEAK FOR ITSELF (King James Version)
THERE IS NOTHING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT TO INDICATE THAT GOD OR CHRIST EVER INTENDED FOR THERE TO BE MORE THAN ONE CHURCH.

Matthew 16:15-19 — JESUS ONLY PROMISED TO BUILD ONE CHURCH
15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Ephesians 4:4-6 — THERE IS ONE BODY
4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. KJV

Ephesians 1:22-23 — THE CHURCH IS THE BODY OF CHRIST
22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. KJV

Colossians 1:18 — THE BODY, THE CHURCH
18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. KJV

1 Corinthians 12:13 — BELIEVERS ARE BAPTIZED INTO THE ONE BODY
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. KJV

1 Corinthians 12:20-21 — THERE ARE MANY MEMBERS, BUT ONLY ONE BODY
20 But now are they many members, yet but one body. KJV

Colossians 1:24 — THE BODY IS THE CHURCH
24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:

II. THE NEW TESTAMENT CLEARLY TEACHES AGAINST DIVISION IN THE CHURCH OF THE LORD.

1 Corinthians 1:10-13 — UNITY IS ENJOINED; DIVISION IS CONDEMNED
10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. 13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? KJV

1 Corinthians 3:1-7 — RELIGIOUS DIVISION IS CARNALITY
3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. 3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? 5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? 6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. KJV

1 Corinthians 4:6-7 — LEARN UNITY FROM THE APOSTLES
6 And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another. 7 For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? KJV

III. PROHPETIC MARKS INDICATE THE TIME OF ESTABLISHMENT OF CHURCH

Romans 3:20-23 - SALVATION APART FROM THE LAW WAS WITNESSED (PROPHESIED) BY THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS AND COMES THROUGH FAITH IN CHRIST
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; KJV

Daniel 2:44-45 — DANIEL PROPHESIED THE KINGDOM TO BE SET UP DURING THE DAYS OF THE ROMAN KINGS WHEN CHRIST CAME BEFORE THE ANCIENT OF DAYS

44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure. KJV

Matthew 16:18 — JESUS TO ESTABLISH THE CHURCH
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell (Greek word is Hades) shall not prevail against it. KJV

John 16:13 — THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH, THE HOLY SPIRIT, WOULD GUIDE THE APOSTLES INTO ALL TRUTH
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. KJV

Acts 1:4-5 — THE APOSTLES WERE COMMANDED TO WAIT FOR THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE CITY OF JERUSALEM
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. KJV

Acts 2:1-4 — THE HOLY SPIRIT COMES WITH POWER ON PENTECOST
2 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. KJV

Joel 2:28-32 — THE OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS PROMISED BY THE PROPHET JOEL 830 YEARS BEFORE THE COMING OF CHRIST
28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. 30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come. 32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call. KJV
